Copa Africa…

The Africa Cup of Nations premieres on Sunday. The big event will start with Cameroon-Burkina Faso, because yes it is a very big football event and anyone who does not understand this is either a racist, or a football idiot, or just a fool. The Copa Africa is the 3rd or 4th most interesting and important national football team event. So simple. If we start with the assumption that the World Cup is by far the top football tournament of interest in the world, that of course the euro is second, then the Copa Africa goes into a head-to-head battle with the Copa America.

Of course in quota and exact numbers the Copa America may be watched with interest by millions more worldwide. I mainly say Brazil and Argentina. But the interest is exhausted in these battles, in the classic South American derbies. Because some of Brazil's matches with Chile and Ecuador, Paraguay and Peru are few and far between. Like no one else deals with Argentina's games against Costa Rica or any other Latin American banana.

In the Africa Cup of Nations, however, the differences that usually separate most groups are minimal. Marginal. Take it easy: At last summer's Euro, a week before the kick-off, things were clear. England and France were big favorites at 6,50, followed by Belgium at 8,00 and the Netherlands-Spain-Germany at 9,00. Far behind the trophy winner finally) Italy and Portugal at 12,00. And from them, everyone knew that in the end Spaniards, Belgians and Dutch just filled the list based on statistics, they had no real hope of conquest, each for his own reason. Essentially the favorites were Anglo-French and Germans (neither did the Portuguese holders ever have a chance to rehearse).

In Africa, just half a week from the first cross, what does he play with the favorites? Senegal (5,00), Algeria (6,00), Egypt of course (8,00), Cameroon (host except team), Ivory Coast, Ghana and why not Morocco and Tunisia (12,00 and 18,00). These are 8 groups of which NONE comes out of the equation easily. Eight teams with trophies in his football past, but also with games ready to make a difference to get it this year!
