Nations League… previews

Germany faces the risk of relegation to the Nations League, which is coming to an end. With the last games expected in the coming days, the teams want to close their obligations with the best possible appearances and results. All four places for the finals of the tournament have not been judged, while only four teams have already secured promotion (Georgia, Ukraine) and relegation (Iceland, Poland). Here are the most interesting things from the upcoming matches for the Nations League, including the Netherlands - France and Italy - Portugal.

LEAGUE A: The race for the finals

A title will be played at the end of the year in the first round of the Nations League and four teams will play semi-finals and finals in the 2018-19 season finale. The world champion, France, is at the top of Group1 with 7 points after 3 matches, but the Netherlands can put it down if they make two wins in its remaining two games.

A draw in Rotterdam on Friday night (16 / 11) is enough to send Tricolor to the finals. Belgium or Switzerland will take the top spot in Group2 and play against each other. Switzerland needs a two-point victory to secure the qualification, while a simple win in Belgium is enough.

Portugal are at the top of Group3 and want a draw against Italy on Saturday (17 / 11), with Roberto Mancini's players hoping they will win against Fernando Santos all over X points against Poland. Despite losing to England at home last month, Spain remain a pioneer in Group3. A win in Croatia on Thursday (4 / 15) will be enough to send La Roja to the finals.

The battle for the rise

In Group1 the rise has become a finished affair by Ukraine, which has 3 × 3 wins, while Russia will rise from Group2 if Sweden does not beat Turkey. Russia needs a point in Solna to clear the lead in the group.

One point will secure the rise from Group3 for Bosnia, which has not dropped a single point after three fights, with Roma striker Edin Djeko knocking three times. At Group4 there are things for the teams to claim, with Wales taking the top spot if they beat Denmark. The latter's win over Cardiff on Friday (16 / 11), however, could send him to League A.

A point could lift Israel to League B, while Alex McLeiss's team needs a win to keep their hopes of growth alive. Finland also needs a point from the games with Greece / Hungary to win the top of Group2, while Norway and Bulgaria are battling for Group3 first.

Serbia will secure a rise from Group4 on Saturday (17 / 11) if it defeats Montenegro and Romania does not beat Lithuania. Georgia has already secured a promotion to League C thanks to its absolute Group1 win, something that Luxembourg can do if Belarus prevails Thursday (15 / 11).

The position leading to Group3's rise will most likely go to Kosovo, which needs a win in Malta and hopes that Azerbaijan will not do the same against the Faroe Islands. Azerbaijan needs all points from its two remaining games to climb. One of the strongest stories in the Nations League is written by Gibraltar, but it is Skopje who will step up if they win the remaining matches, with one of them being against Gibraltar.

The battle to avoid relegation

League D is the last step in the Nations League, so no team gets relegated, so that won't happen in San Marino, which has not gotten to the point.

Albania will be relegated from League C if not defeated outside of Scotland, while Group2's stalemate, Estonia, will also fall if it loses to Hungary. Slovenia needs four points from matches inside Norway and outside Bulgaria if it wants to avoid that relegation and not Cyprus under Group3.

As for Group4, Lithuania will probably be relegated, which has not scored and should win out of Romania and Serbia if it hopes to stay in League C. Slovakia will find the last place in the group. Group1 has no points, but the Czech Republic can do it in a draw in Prague on Monday (19 / 11).

Sweden have reached the quarter-finals of the World Cup, but are expected to be relegated from Group2 if they lose to Turkey, which will lose if they lose. Austria needs a point from the remaining two games on Group3 to confirm that Northern Ireland - who have no points - will be relegated to League C. There they will meet their neighbor, Ireland, unless Denmark loses to Wales itself gets three points in Aarhus.

Because games matter

Gibraltar achieved the first victory of its history in international football, which demonstrates the importance of the Nations League to some nations. There is also a possibility that some teams will get a ticket to the final phase of Euro 2020, depending on how they go in the remaining matches.

The teams that will go up from Leagues B, C, D will play the playoffs with each other for Euro 2020 if they fail to secure a qualifying ticket. Even those teams that can't secure a raise have a reason to play, as their ranking is affected by their results in the Nations League and this will play a role in the December 2 qualifying for Euro 2020.
