The tripod breaks…

For almost four decades, the big teams of Istanbul have been dominating the Turkish Super League. Galatasaray, Fenerbahce and Besiktas alternate at the top, with the only break being in 2010, when Bursaspor won the title.

After the results of the two days, however, it is clear that the πο tripolo (poetic license) is expected to break again. Trabzonspor's 3-1 away win over Galatasaray left the champions at -11 from the top, just four games before the end of the league.

The cup will end up either in Basaksehir or in Trabzonspor, which after the double against Galata was again at -2 by Basak. The latter came very close to winning the first title last year, but her inexperience cost her and she saw Galatasaray cut the thread first.

But this year was an opportunity. With Besiktas and Fenerbahce faltering and Galatasaray spoiling them in the final straight, the promoted teams that had faced Olympiakos and AEK last August, respectively, are indulging in a race with the coveted championship.

And if for Basak this will be the first, if it comes, for the pride of Trebizond a title would also mean a lot. 1984 marks the last time in the Super League, with Trabzon winning all six of its championships between 1976 and 1984! Since then, the descent began, with the 2010 Cup being the last silver one.

It is worth mentioning that wherever the "Black Sea catastrophe" ends, Europe will probably not play due to punishment. There is also the possibility of a double, since the team of Hussein Tsimsir has qualified for the Cup final, where it will face Alanyaspor of Bacaceta, Siopi and Javella.

PS: The aforementioned five teams, Galata, Fener, Besiktas, Trabzon and Bursa are the only ones to have won a championship in the neighboring country! If Basak picks it up, it will be the sixth.
